Every Monday morning we begin school at PCWV with a morning gathering in the gym. As a school community we begin with group prayer followed by children leading us in pledges to the American flag, Christian flag, and the Bible.
One morning I asked a first grade student if there was anything special she wanted me to pray for. Her reply caught me off guard: “please pray for God, that He has a good day today too.” Wow, I’m not sure that I have ever thought about giving God a good day. It seems to me that I am usually focused on having the good day for myself or for others attending PC West Valley School.
This child’s simple, yet rather profound, comment led me to ask myself “what are some things that I can do to help God enjoy His day?” And while I am certain that being actively engaged in doing good deeds does please God, I am also quite certain that what He really wants from each of us is not a bunch of good deeds but simply our hearts. When Jesus was asked in Matthew 22: 36-38 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?” Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.
So as we begin our day today, let’s begin by pleasing God. We can do this by simply whispering to God that we love Him and that it is our heart’s desire that He would have a good day too!

One of the joys of teaching the little ones for me is that I am reminded daily how to be childlike in my faith! Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteChild-like faith is sometimes the only way I can deal with situations that my rational, mature adult-like mind can't get wrapped around...why do loved ones die?...why can't people accept God's love and care?...how can God look at the way my life is at this moment and not weep?...
Then in my childlike faith I remember "Oh yeah....Loved ones die because dying is part of living, and people can't accept God's love and care because they are blinded by sin and fear, and yes, God does weep with me when my life is full of sadness at this moment...."
Thanks God for reminding me in my moments of childlike-ness that I am YOUR CHILD and greatly loved!
